Networking Works with Choice Realty and Home Owners Clubs of America

When your mother tells you she wants something done. What do you do? You get it done. That’s what was on Charlotte Powell’s mind when she called Margaret Agee at Home Owners Clubs of America (HOCOA) in January 2007.

“I recall her asking, ‘my mother wants her house sold in 30 days, who do you recommend we use,’ and I immediately thought of Jonathan Lee who operates Choice Realty, an investment real estate brokerage,” said Agee.

“Many of the homes we buy and sell are owned by senior citizens who are making a move into another stage in their lives. We have a process that works faster than a traditional listing,” said Lee.

Later that week, Charlotte and her husband, John Powell, along with Charlotte’s parents, Ruby and James Nelson, who are in their 80s, met with Jonathan Lee and Phil Hapke of Choice Realty to discuss their desire to sell the house quickly. “I had a good feeling about Jonathan and Phil from the first time we met them. They put my parents at ease and were very honest and upfront with them,” says Charlotte.

That evening, the Nelsons and Choice Realty signed a contract with a closing date set that month. “They did exactly what they said they would do,” said John. “From the time we met with Jonathan and Phil to the closing date took less than 30 days.”

Had Margaret not referred the Powells to Choice Realty, this networking story would not exist. “There have been numerous times that I have referred my investors to HOCOA,” said Lee. “It’s the real value in networking with people you can trust,” added Agee.

Earlier this Fall, Mr. Lee received a call from the Nelsons’ son-in-law in Beaufort, SC, who is planning a move back to Missouri to be closer to family members. Rather than go with a traditional Realtor, he contacted Choice Realty.

For several weeks we had been helping a 73 year old woman with a reverse mortgage. Her only income is Social Security and she has been in and out of the hospital lately. At 4 p.m. we received word that her electricity was being cut off at the end of the day because a check she wrote to SCE&G was returned from the bank and she was unable to pay her current bill. In about three weeks the reverse mortgage will close and her financial difficulties will be eased but that didn’t help in today’s crisis.

Carmen Adderly - SCE&G

Fortunately we contacted Carmen Adderly’s office. LSN members may remember that Carmen spoke at an LSN meeting last year about the services SCE&G provides for seniors. The SCE&G serviceman was on the way to our client’s home to turn off the electricity at the pole but Carmen’s assistant, Mary Ann, was able to avert this measure. We are very relieved that our client – who is in poor health – will not be subjected to the cold. We are glad to have people like Carmen and Mary Ann in our network and glad that Yvonne Cooper, Program Chairman, arranged to have them as speakers last year.

At our first networking meeting last year, we all sat around round tables with our colleagues and talked about how ways we could offer assistance and ways that we felt we needed assistance. In our discussion, it was mentioned by, Erin Branham with Lincare, Inc., that she was getting married in a few months. I was recently engaged too, so we had lots to talk about! She asked me if I had bought a dress yet and I explained to her that I was having a difficult time because the dresses were so expensive and I was having a hard time justifying the cost for something that was only going to be worn once.

Erin told me that she had felt the same way and that she bought her dress through a N.P.O. called Brides Against Breast Cancer. All of the wedding dresses are donated to the agency (they were either samples in a bridal salon or worn in a bridal show) and 100% of the cost of the wedding dresses goes to granting wishes for woman with breast cancer. It was PERFECT! I was able to get a beautiful dress at a great price and all the proceeds went to a good cause. I am forever grateful for the networking opportunities within Lowcountry Senior Network both professionally and personally; I am convinced without LSN I would never have known about Bridges Against Breast Cancer and never would have found the “guilt-free” dress of my dreams.
